Hello my name is Jon Gunderson.
I work at the University of Illinois in disability services.
I’ve been working in the area of technology and disability for over 40 years and specifically in web technologies for 20 years.
I’m a member of the aria working group and a contributor to the aria authoring practices.
Thank you for the opportunity to talk about some of the basics of aria technologies.
There’s a lot of misunderstandings about how aria works and how to use it to make webpages more accessible and compliant with W3C Web content accessibility standards.
Today were going to talk about some the basic principles associated with aria.
We are going to build a simple custom checkbox widget using some of these principles and show how it changes the user experience for people using screen readers.
I’ll also be talking about some the new features that are available in up coming release of aria 1.2.
I will also reference the aria authoring practices which I think is an important resource for anybody trying to understand how to use aria to make websites more accessible.
